The Making of Modern Ukraine

CHAPTER

The Germans Collaborate With the Soviets

When Poland is broken, a lot of young men then join the Soviet militia. In those deportations of Poles, many times the local militia men who carried them out were of Ukrainian nationality. When the Soviets are driven out by the Germans in summer 1941, a few thousand Ukraine-born people joined the German police force. They would never have gotten this education without the German invasion. These men were then the ones who were directly involved in ethnic cleansing of Poles in 1943. So it's just important to remember that these crimes which have been known about for decades should be remembered now.
