History's Secret Heroes: Series 1: George Takei and the American Internment Camps
History's Heroes
The Importance of Loyalty
Norman Tackay was born in Japan but immigrated to the United States as a teenager. His family had no loyalty to emperor Hirohito, so they felt they could not swear loyalty to the U.S. In 1943, every adult in an internment camp was told to fill out a loyalty questionnaire. Question 27 asked if Nissai men were willing to serve on combat duty wherever ordered. Women were asked if they'd be willing to serve in the women's army corps.
