William Burroughs could have been a dominant writer in the American establishment, but he just wasn't that type of person. He was a little too weird, too impulsive and frankly, underachieving for most of his life to understand really how Burroughs would make it as one of the most wild writers in the 20th century. I think you have to really understand this Yankee inventor mindset that he inherited, but which he would twist to his own purposes.
