CHAPTER

What Is a Sentencing Hearing Like?

In 1976, David Washington was accused of killing three people during a robbery spree over a 10 day period. By the time of the trial, Mr. Washington had confessed to all three murders and he decided to plead guilty. He could have been sentenced to a prison term or he could be sentenced to death in Florida. His lawyer failed to ask the judge for time to prepare for sentencing. And finally, he failed to make any meaningful argument about sentencing to the judge.
