There was ambiguity in blurry boundary. Many jews who were interested in in foreign ideas, in greek ideas and philosophy. There were gentiles who were very interested in judaism,. Who took up the customs the languages of jews. Also marginal groups that you could consider jews, but that some jews considered to be apostates or outside the fold like samaritans.
