Bob Greene: I feel very strongly that Lincoln was the first public figure in the US to be embalmed. He says modern embalming in the US is an invention of the Civil War. Most people who actually are full mortician, like they have degrees in mortuary science. The funeral industry is a very strong and it basically cropped up around the civil war.
