"If Jake did nothing more than affirm every momentary impulse that I had, I would not consider him a friend," he says. "I mean, pandering to mobs is neither noble nor democratic." The first stanza of this poem by Hill is so obscure for me that I don't engage until the second stanza. Then I like the third stanza because I understand it and am kind of back in it.
