"I just felt like I read so much Bob that I was like, dude, this has just got to be it," he says. The first chapter of the book is written from a first-person point of view. "There's no cohesive argument... We don't know the through line." It took more than a year for him to get his story down on paper and have it polished up before being accepted by Penguin Publishing House in 1993. He didn't study literature in college; he just read a lot.
