There was a kind of overt ideological competition during the second half of the twentieth century. That is sort of gone out of a window withe the legitimation of communist regimes. I am nevertheless more worried about the stability of at least some parts of our constitutional settlement than you are. So what you're describing to me sounds much like how many historians might describe late nineteenth century us. And there's, of course, the complications of the multi-national companies as well as outside actors.
