The Nine Herbs Charm

The name Woden appears elsewhere in the Anglo-Saxon literary corpus, but chiefly as a royal ancestor. The Nine Herbs Charm offers the closest thing we have to a mythological story about Woden. This may well have been filtered through cultural memory of Woden as a force in the world and that the Norse called Othene. But it is likely that whoever wrote the charm was not pagan, rather they were apparently influenced by Christianity.
