The Cold War and the Government's Strategies to Manage It
The threat of nuclear war was ever present from 1949 when the Soviets tested their first nuclear device. Nations could now be obliterated at the push of a button, regardless of how large and modern their country's army was. No blueprint existed for responding to weapons that could wipe out entire societies in seconds. The government tried to put a number of hypothetical and often mad sounding contingency plans in place to protect people in the event of an attack.
