Is There a Genetic Component in Synesthesia?
A big part of developing a brain is pruning back the stuff that you don't need, because the brain wants to be efficient. We find when we look at children with synesthesia, that particularly for coloured letters and numbers, we only really see it happening when they go to school. It's not the case that your synesthesia is fixed from the day you're born, which this idea does. But still, as you gain expertise in literacy, or maybe even expertise in music, these kind of pathways solidify in the brain in ways that they do not with other people.
