The brass knocker, however, at times turns into a hideous applevendor. Sometimes she is an apple vendor, and sometimes a brass knocker. And this casts a certain air of uncertainty about all the proceedings, which is perfectly deliberate. When hoffman was walking across the bridge in berlin, he often felt as if he was icapiculated in a glass bottle. He wasn't sure whether the people he saw around him were human beings or dolls.
