The Importance of Conversion
There's an actual difference in practical law because we inherit our Jewish identity from our mothers. The only period that makes a child Jewish is the mother, the father's irrelevant. For the other nations of the world, it's only the father. Now the question is what status did the Jews before they gave me the Torah have and it's a difference of opinion. Some say it was the mother and the same as the father which means some say that what we call Jewish identity didn't exist yet.
