What Do We Not Know About Electrons That We Might Get to Know?

There are theories, really just theories, that they could be made of something smaller. I believe the electron is fundamental and has nothing inside it but itself. Why does the charge of the electron so perfectly balance the positive charge of the nucleus? Is there some deep symmetry in nature that means these things must exist? And why do quarks seem to be related to each other by some kind of principle? It's probably not much that we're trying to find out within them.
