UVA, UVB - What's the Difference?
UVA is associated with more immediate erythema or redness in the skin. UVA radiation, where you go into the sun and you're a little toasty, can fade pretty quickly. You have UVB that's responsible for your more long term tan. That UVB is also responsible for converting this precursor to vitamin D to its active form. And that is one of the reasons evolutionarily that it is beneficial to have less pigmentation where there is less UV radiation overall.
