The Origins of Marx's Critical Philosophy

Herbert Markuses' 1955 book argues that Western societies oppress people by getting them to suppress and subvert their own id, especially their libidos. This led him to develop a key concept of neo-Marxist thought: false consciousness. In some sense the essence of neo Marxist philosophy is that capitalist societies become increasingly consumerist as they hide the true nature of oppression from themselves.
