The Importance of Desire in Language Use
The maternal figure is the primary caregiver. It's a subject position that anyone can occupy, but it's a necessary subject position because the child is born into a body that requires copious amounts of care. The car keys that they look for in order to leave. The phone that they smile at when there's nothing as the child can see that's laughable about the situation. And whatever the child imagines the maternal figure to be also interested in.
