Is There a Connection in a Network?
Patrick: I think of everything that you're describing as mapping people out in space and may be having patterns there. And one of the standard models that i use actually takes that mind's i approtrate this idea that people in a network are situated in a latent space. This particular model makes the assumption that everybody has a position in this latent space, and that the distances between pairs of people are what contribute to the probability of a connection. So often before fitting the model, will run an m d s to use as starting values for these latent positions.
