The Importance of Geographic Constraints in Product Development
The conventional wisdom was to narrow focus to a category like Amazon did with books or geography, like Yelp did with San Francisco. We did all categories and all geographies from the beginning. People thought that it wouldn't work, that we were boiling the ocean. In retrospect, it was the only way to build a marketplace in our space at scale. And then what would be the exception that they mentioned? So the exception is thumbtack.
