What you say now will determine what you can do in power. They're weighing up every word because they want to win every vote. In an age where people are aching for change, it can all start to look too defensive and timid. So there won't be a universal child care scheme if they've rolled it out in opposition. That then becomes counterproductive. Words now matter how far do they need to go in their timidity to win the election.
