The City of Marseilles Was Founded on Top of the Ancient Greek City of Massalia
The modern city of marseilles is founded, or has grown on top of the ancient greek city of massalia. It was built on a fortified, or fortifiable promontory that overlooked a bay. Having a really good bay was important for ancient shipping because ships didn't anchor out at sea and had to send tenders in instead. And so having a bay meant that a city could engage in considerable trade.
