The Importance of Preventing Natural Disasters
Anastasia Sextus is professor of earthquake engineering at Bristol University. She explains why we're so bad at quake predictions and how we can prevent them from becoming disastrous, like what happened in Turkey in February. The main problem is that they are the result of a very large scale phenomenon - when the tectonic plates collide, they push against themselves. But although we know where the riskiest places are from our mapping of tectonics and centuries of historical data, we're still living in these risky places and in large numbers.
