Unsettling Discoveries and Restless Nights

This chapter explores the public health concerns that arose from the increasing number of people moving, working, and dying in the area. The influx of new bodies led to issues such as corpses being churned up by heavy rain or dug up by animals. Grave robbers were also a problem. Some of the bodies were surprisingly well-preserved, leading to speculation about improper burial or suspicious deaths. These bodies were believed to rise from the grave at night and were known as Revenants or Upirs.
