Ancient Skepticism - Suspension of Judgment

The idea of suspending judgment is at the core of ancient scepticism, whereas it plays no role in cartesian scepticism. The greek word for the suspension of judgment, epoe, became something of a standard around which the sceptical tradition could rally. In common with the other hellenistic schools, the sceptics put forth a picture of the ideal sage and of a life that would be free of disturbance. All impressions leave room for doubt. Thus the wise man would always suspend judgment.
