The Nazis tried to woo the abdicated king in 1937. They wanted him to marry a young German princess and reel him in. The pair were treated like royalty, given an official visit by Hitler. There is even a theory that they kept Edward close because they wanted to install him as a puppet king if Britain fell to the Nazis. He might no longer be king, but he could come in useful down the road. And when war broke out in 1939, Edward's position was even more precarious. What would happen if he was captured by the Nazis and used as a bargaining chip? This soon became a very real threat - there was a Nazi plot to kidnap him and bring him to Germany
