The economy is still smaller than it was back at the end of 2019. Household incomes are not growing this year due to inflation and big increases in taxes. We're in the middle of a very short and very quick increase in the tax burden. A long drawn out stagnation in household incomes which is not going to leave people feeling desperately positive after all of this. I think we might give Jeremy Hunt to seven out of ten for effort on this budget but probably no more than five out of 10 for attainment given that his efforts did seem to go awry rather when it came to some of the announcements that he made anyway.
