The overall CPU and GPU usage between the two versions was essentially the same. The ref based code allowed me to decouple re renders from the internal application state updates. It feels cool, but it also has some advantages. So one of the big advantages is I could write the animation algorithm independent of the timer that causes what the user sees to get updated on the screen.
