The last case of smallpox ever is more of a tragedy. A medical photographer at the University of Birmingham in England was accidentally exposed and later died. After this tragedy, all known stockpiles of the virus were either destroyed or transferred to one of two WHO reference laboratories. Since then, governments have dropped their vaccination programs.
