My Grandma, You Know, Was a Student Coming From India
The author's grandmother came to the U.S. from India at 18 years old for her PhD. She faced sexism, racism and other challenges as a woman of color in San Francisco during the civil rights movement. "She said, you know, this is my fight too," she says about her immigrant past. The daughter who grew up between Oakland and Berkeley was able to build on her experience as a mom by being an only child.
