In the Ottoman Empire, champagne was long seen as not really alcoholic. And then we move into the age of empire, or the age of European empire. And that plays a rather significant role in bringing alcohol to a lot of these societies. But you have to be a little careful there, I think; it's very different from Sub-Saharan Africa.
