The word pathos in Greek can mean a lot of different things, but it often is just to be passive. Nastorius ends up being the bishop or the archbishop of the patriarch of Constantinople. He was upset about this because he was an example of how God could be passed by God. And so to say that Mary gave birth to God is to say that God was like changed or that he suffered or had passed.
