CHAPTER

What Would Voltaire Say About Morality?

Voltaire believed that we should judge things by their consequences in terms of enhancing the human condition and reduction of human suffering. The unspoken ethic criterion is, it saves lives, it eliminates suffering,. And i think one finds that ethical criterion underlying every chapter m of this work. John locke argues that god had harmonized what he considered to be virtue with the real causes of human well being. Bishop butler will say that god has made our moral duty and our self interest perfectly coincident. Since we learn from experience, that means we also learn ethics from experience - unless we have a source that tells us god's mind and what god wills.
