In 1969, Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin was appalled after witnessing the effects of a devastating oil spill in Santa Barbara. He envisioned establishing a day of reflection and action for people to make their voices heard about environmental concerns. In the run-up to the event, Nelson partnered with a young activist named Dennis Hayes to ensure things went off without a hitch.
