I think the fact that real agents have to go through an existential metabolic struggle is extremely important in creating cognitive systems. Once you get once you start developing models of the outside world as agents that do things as chunks not all the microstates but like here is this thing and it has certain behaviors and I need to track it, then before you know you end up with a belief in free will. You're basically only doing that because you don't have the energy and the time budget to do anything else. It's great at predicting what will happen after somebody else has set up an interesting system but you would never design anything because they all look the same to you right? That kind of a thing
