Gene editing technology called CRISPR has been used to treat genetic diseases of the bloodstream, liver, eye, and immune system. Geneticists made use of that function to develop a cure for sickle cell disease - which is currently the first CRISPR-based therapeutic up for approval by the FDA. As new techniques and technologies are developed, more and more organs will come online with power to deliver human gene therapy. Many a story gets more complicated when it comes to using that power to help people in need.
