Rationally Speaking Podcast

CHAPTER

Is It Maritocracy?

In aristocratic times, people who landed on top imagine some account of why they deserved it. But a martocratic society is built on such a rationalization from the start. The term maritocracy was coined in the late fifties by michael young and he predicted that as opportunities became more equal, those who didn't flourish would come to believe the demoralizing thought that they had no one to blame but themselves for their failure to rise. That was his prediction. He saw maritocracy not as an ideal ofa society, he saw it as a distopian scenario.
