In australia's indigenous cultures, walk about is a ride of passage where adolescent males live alone in the wilderness for a period of time. The term has become twisted and misused by non indigenous people who see aboriginal people as living transient, nomadic life styles. Some use the word walk about in a derogatory sense to imply an indigenous person has just taken off on a whim without warning.
