Mainstream parties sought to address inequality by offering individual upward mobility through college education. This was another iteration of this rhetoric, which reflected a particular stance toward the growing inequality that was deepening. So I argue that it's a mistake to create an economy that sets us a necessary precondition for dignified work in a decent life for a four year university degree most people don't have.
