Baselgier hired an architect to provide a lot of this ornamental panache to the buildings. The pumping station at Crossness has been restored by a group of volunteers, and the iron work is absolutely magnificent. And it was also in the summer of 1858 that the Great Clock, which came to be known as Big Ben after Sir Benjamin Hall, was put up. They took the public buildings very seriously indeed, even when they were devoted to quite basic purposes.
