The Four Surfaces of Epithelia
All epithelia at some point will be bound to connective tissue. So you have the top surface that faces the external environment. Then there are the surfaces on the side, so the lateral surfaces. This is where it adjoins its neighbor. And then we have the underneath, which is the basal surface. Basal like basement.
