Congress realized the mistake and passed a law that basically said you can get a non exclusive license to these things. So what happened in the 90s? Drug companies like Sanofi, Novo Nordisk and Lilly, I believe, went out to approve upon Mother Nature. They took insulin and made synthetic modifications to it to come up with a better insulin.
