Newman's style is so beautiful, i find it just absolutely beautiful. Do regard him as maybe the greatest stylist of english prose. There were different ways in which you could understand development. Could be exegesis. It could be differentiation, could be specification. It might be drawing out what's potential. I think he's talking about a kind of explosion of expressions of marian piety in the early fifth century,. after the nician council of nicea in the late fourth and early centuries.
