Henry morton stanley was one of a very small number of people to experience combat on both sides of the war in the land and on the sea. He spent some time fighting for the union as an artillerist until he gets sick from dysentery and received a medical discharge. In 1864 he enlisted in the union navy and got a posting on the frigate minnesota by virtue of his very nice pinmanship. His ship bombarded a confederate fort in north carolina during that battle. Stanley later became an anti-slavery crusader so how could he not have known what this fight was about, asks author adam hosschild.
