Johann levgrin says he is worried that the issue of naturalness is being swept under the rug from effective field theory principles. We expect the standard model higgs mass and cosmotro constant to be much larger than what we have measured. The only room for changing the dynamics of the known fields is in their higher order interactions, riht how an electron a interacts with two photons at once,. or something like that. In order to have this kind of effect, we either need truly new fields which are pushing around thestandard model in some non obvious way, or we need something dramatically different. That's really what people want - they don't care about higher order operators on
Welcome to the October 2021 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). I take the large number of questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable size — based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good — and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!
