The Nation of Immigrants
The idea of a nation of immigrants is not contrary to what you would typically hear in school. It's something from time immemorial, but really comes out of a very specific Democratic Party political plan to win over ethnic Catholic voters during the late 1950s or early 1960s. The key distinction there is that the people who showed up on the Mayflower were not coming in to a settled society. They ultimately settled on the land and created a new community.
