I think it has to do with the ease with which historical grievances are mobilized. It's harder to mobilize people who are separated by class because there are so many other things that bind them together, like interest in music and sports. There is a kind of mysticism that accrues within the U.S. African-American tradition in this hemisphere has been so deeply rooted in religious sentiment. If you ask me what connection does Al Sharpton have to sub-Saharan Africa? I would say none.
