The Mutationist View of Evolution
In the 70s and 80s, Natives were focused on understanding variation. They had already went over to this mutationist view of evolution. That was a pretty serious challenge to the conventional view but most organizmobiologists just didn't really care because it's just these molecules. So I wouldn't agree that there's sort of a pendulum swinging back and forth between people thinking about evolution from new mutations and people thinking about standing variation.
