Gorbichev set to work dismantling the system that he had proved so disfunctional in its first seven decades. He completed the withdrawal from afghanistan in 19 89 and told european leaders they were effectively on their own. After briefly surviving a failed coup attempt in 19 91, he was finally forced to resign in favor of a feberal and alcohoic, boris yelson. The soviet union collapsed a day later.
