The East India Company and the American Revolution

Adam Smith was repulsed by what he saw as the East India Company's self-dealing. He found it, in Atal's words, politically oppressive and economically unproductive. The company got itself involved in the American Revolution with its monopoly on tea. But don't modern firms get a version of a special permit from governments to operate as they do?
